Dr. Paul Engels graduated medical school from The University of Western Ontario (London, ON) in 2003. He subsequently completed residency in General Surgery and fellowship in Critical Care at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, AB), followed by a fellowship in Trauma & Acute Care Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (Toronto, ON). Dr. Engels practices clinically as a Trauma Surgeon, Acute Care General Surgeon, and Intensivist at the Hamilton General Hospital.

Dr. Engels has a longstanding involvement with trauma research including multi-institution collaboration, with over 75 peer-reviewed publications as a co-author as well as multiple textbook contributions.

He has been involved with the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons since 2016, serving in the roles of Vice-Chair and then Chair of the Ontario Committee on Trauma, as well as on the ATLS committee, and currently in the role of Course Chair for the Advanced Trauma Operative Management (ATOM) course which is delivered worldwide.

Dr. Paul Engels is the current Trauma Medical Director at Hamilton Health Sciences and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at McMaster University (Hamilton, ON). Most recently, he has taken on a new role at Ontario Health as the Provincial Trauma Lead.
