Learning Objectives

  • Have a firm understanding of the global impact of ventral and parastomal hernias
  • Illustrate measures used in the prevention of incisional and parastomal hernias
  • Grasp the relevant surgical anatomy of the abdominal wall in relation to abdominal wall hernias
  • Create an Evidence Based approach to the management of complex abdominal wall hernias 
  • Recognize the role of the plastic surgeon in complex abdominal wall hernia repair
  • Demonstrate the necessary surgical steps required to perform anterior and posterior separation of the components and laparoscopic Sugarbaker parastomal hernia technique
  • Appreciate the surgical steps required to raise a free tensor fascia lata flap
